How is AI creating NFT art?

AI generated art is exactly what you think it might be from the context. It’s art that has been created by a computer with little to no human influence (besides the instructions of course). This technology has been around since 1973. An artist named Harold Cohen was the one who wrote the program AARON.

AARON was designed to produce drawings by following a set of rules. The new generation. The core principals still apply to newly developed art generating AI, instructions go in and generated art comes out. The difference is the details and the process. The main difference in the process is, instead of the algorithm being a set of rules the AI will follow to generate the art; it focuses on learning by analyzing different images.

How does it work? To start the process the artists will upload hundreds if not thousands of images that will be analyzed by the AI helping it understand the aesthetics. Once the learning is complete a new image can be generated in adherence to the learned aesthetics. Most of the art generating algorithms in the past few years are called ‘Generative Adversarial Networks’ or GANs for short. These classes of algorithms have two sides to them; one that generates the art, and the other learns the aesthetic of the uploaded images. The learning part of the algorithm checks whether the generated art and the uploaded images match in aesthetic. Anyone can do it!

Now there are tools that have been created with pre written algorithms. What this means is anyone can create AI generated art and mint it as an NFT. Most of them follow a simple set of steps, the user will first enter a few keywords or phrases (sunset in the forest, fire and water, African wilderness) that will be generated as art. Next the user chooses a style which the generated art will be based on (the aesthetic). And that’s all, the art is generated. It's become this easy because the algorithm is pre written. AI generated art is being sold for great deals of money, both as an NFT and physical art. These truly are very exciting times we live in.
